Melissa Xiao

Born in 2006, Melissa Xiao began her piano studies with the Suzuki Method at the age of 4 at the Mount Royal University. She performed her first piano concert at age 6. In 2013, she started studying piano under Linh Nguyen. Currently, she is a student of Krzysztof Jablonski and is preparing for her ARCT examination. Melissa has also taken master classes with notable pianists such as Konstantin Shamray, Bruce Anderson, and Sayá Sangidorj.

Every year, Melissa attends the Calgary Performing Arts Festival, where she has won many first and second prizes for her age group. In 2018, Melissa won second prize at the XIII Huesca International Piano Competition in Spain. In 2019, she placed 5th in the Canadian Music Competition. She has also received a silver medal at the first Steinway Canada Young Artist Virtual Piano Competition in Calgary Division IV in 2020.

Outside of piano, Melissa also enjoys participating in math olympiads, placing on the honours rolls of the AMC and the Pascal Contest held by the University of Waterloo. Melissa has been playing competitive volleyball with the Tuscany Sports Association Volleyball Club since 2018. In her spare time, she enjoys listening to music, drawing, and reading manga.
