Angela Sin Ying Chan

Violinist Angela (Sin Ying) Chan attended the Heifetz Institute in both 2015 and 2019.  She started learning the violin at the age of 3, and joined the Junior Music Program of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, studying with Prof. Michael James Ma, at the age of 5.  In the same year, she was invited as a solo player by Microsoft Hong Kong to perform in the Opening Ceremony of CyberPort.

At 12, Angela studied in The Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing with Vera Tsu Wei Ling. She was the concertmaster of “National Prodigies Chamber Orchestra” of the Central Conservatory of Music. In 2013, Angela was accepted with a full scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studies with Heifetz Institute faculty member Shmuel Ashkenasi, Aaron Rosand, and Pamela Frank.

Angela has taken part in numerous numbers of international violin competitions. Some highlights among her awards are First Prize and Concerto Performance Award of the 8th International Louise Spohr Competition, Second Prize of the Second Harbin International Competition, and a laureate at both the 2019 Michael Hill International Violin Competition, the XV Andrea Postacchini Competition. 

As a chamber musician, Angela founded AYA Piano Trio in 2013 with fellow Curtis students Andres Sanchez and Ying Li,  The piano trio won First Prize at the WDAV Young Chamber Musicians Competition in 2018.  

As a soloist, Angela has appeared with orchestras including The Staatskapelle Weimar Orchestra of Germany, the China Philharmonic Orchestra, EOS Orchestra of Beijing, and the Hong Kong Symphonia. In 2016, Angela was selected as a soloist to a tour around the states with The Curtis Chamber Orchestra. She has also toured with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra in their “2017 Europe Tour.”  In addition to joining Heifetz on Tour for the holiday season, Angela also went on an extensive recital tour of China during the 2019-2020 season.
